Location & Surroundings

Heiðarás is an ideal place to spend a few days exploring the area, by car or on foot. And after an enjoyable day out, you can come home to your cosy, welcoming cottage to relax and plan the next day’s adventures!

We are right on the Golden Circle, the classic route that takes in many outstanding places of natural beauty in southwest Iceland: the Thingvellir National Park, the Gullfoss waterfall and the hot springs at Geysir. The capital city, Reykjavík, is in easy reach, as are the Blue Lagoon, Hvalfjörður,  Borgarfjörður, Laugarvatn, Reykholt, Flúðir and the south coast.

See the Thingvellir National Park website for information on walking routes in the Park. When visiting the Park it is a good idea to start at the Visitor Centre to learn about the nature and history of this iconic place and see maps of the area. Fishing licences for rod fishing in the lake are sold in the Service Center.

See the Visit South Iceland website for a wealth of information about travel and attractions in the south. The website also includes some practical tips about driving in Iceland – which is rather different from what many of our guests are used to.

Þingvellir National Park

Our neighbour

Thingvellir is a historic site dear to the heart of every Icelander, now a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The Alþingi, Iceland‘s parliament, was founded here in 930 AD and continued to assemble here until 1798. Þingvellir is the site of many major events in Icelandic history, for instance, the adoption of the Christian religion around 1000 AD, and the foundation of the modern Republic of Iceland on 17 June 1944. Þingvellir has been a National Park since 1930.

As remarkable for its nature and geology as for its history, Þingvellir lies at the junction of the Eurasian and North American tectonic plates and boasts a magnificent volcanic landscape.

Þingvellir is a wonderland for nature-lovers and all who enjoy the outdoor life, at all times of year – whether during the long bright summer evenings, in gorgeous autumn colours, or in starry winter nights under the Northern Lights.

Lake Thingvellir are family-run

About your hosts

Your hosts, Bogga and Kolbeinn, are local people. They are never far away, as they live right next door. The family have lived at Heiðarás since 2008, and Kolbeinn grew up on the neighbouring farm, Heiðarbær. Bogga is a preschool teacher, who now works fulltime in the couple’s tourism business. Kolbeinn is a master machinist who has a contracting business. The youngsters in the family, Kristrún and Tryggvi, help out with our guests. The younger two, Guðmundur and Hildur, can’t wait to get involved too! We speak English and Danish, as well as Icelandic, of course. Don’t hesitate to get in touch if you have any questions or need advice. Welcome!

The perfect spot!

I spent the night in a wonderful and modern wooden cabin with an amazing view of the lake. The owners are welcoming and have a taste for design. The national park is very accessible and the owners also provide information on supermarkets and other facilities located nearby.

Excellent!

We were here for one night, WE absolutely loved it! The cabin was very cosy and warm! We wish we would have had more time here! it was amazing! It was very windy and rainy when we came but it was awesome anyway! We had a great view of the lake. Watched the sheep graze on the land! It’s a great place! We would recommend this place you won’t be sorry! It’s great!

A wonderful stay in a stunning setting

We stayed here for a night on our visit to Iceland, the view was incredible. There was a lot of wind and rain but the cottages were snug and beautiful. Our hosts were very accommodating and friendly. We would definitely recommend it to others in the area.

Absolutely fabulous!

Staying in our Lake Thingvellir Cottage was the favorite part of our 8-day trip to Iceland. The cottage was spacious but cozy, the host attentive and gracious and the views cannot be beat. The location right by the park is amazing, and it was within driving distance to many of the things we had planned to see and do during our trip. The free wi-fi was excellent for sharing photos with friends and family while we were away.
